Dr. Khani is highly skilled and experienced in advanced restorative dentistry, including the placement and restoration of dental implants. Dental implants look, feel and function like your own teeth and are used to permanently replace one or more teeth. They can also be used to support dentures. Composed of metals such as titanium and other materials, including a bone-like ceramic material that is compatible with the body, dental implants can last more than 30 years with proper care and maintenance. The advantages of dental implants include preservation of facial structure, maintenance of jaw bone density and the correction of some speech problems. They also do not compromise or affect the surrounding teeth. For more complex implant placements, Dr. Khani may refer you to a specialist.
Procedure
Dr. Khani will place your implant after administering local anesthetic. Precise placement of the implant is vital as the placement will arch and align with the other teeth and have a natural gum line. Once the implant is inserted, it is allowed to heal and integrate with the bone. Once the healing process is completed and the jawbone is attached to the implant, Dr. Khani will then prepare and place the restoration. He goes to great lengths to ensure that the restoration is esthetically pleasing.
Time Involved
The implant process generally takes anywhere from three to nine months, with the majority of that time (6 months) dedicated to healing. The remainder of the time is used for fitting the replacement tooth or teeth.
Types of Implants
A root implant is the most popular implant and is placed into the jaw bone, similar to the roots of your natural teeth. Dr. Khani also places mini implants. These are designed to stabilize loose dentures allowing improved function. The "minis" are smaller and about half the cost of conventional implants.
Candidates
It is important that patients seeking dental implants have overall good health, healthy gums and sufficient jaw bone structure. We have found that patients who clench or grind their teeth, smoke or drink alcohol as well as those with chronic diseases such as diabetes have a lower success rate.
